Can You Cook Shrimp Straight from Frozen?

Yes — and it often produces better results than thawed shrimp! Here’s why: frozen shrimp placed directly into a hot pan sear on the outside while gently cooking through, resulting in a juicy, tender texture. Thawed shrimp can release excess water and end up steaming instead of searing.

Cooking Methods & Times

Stir-Fry (3–4 min)

Heat a wok or pan on high. Add oil, garlic, and ginger. Add frozen shrimp directly — they’ll release a little water at first, then sear beautifully. Season with soy sauce, oyster sauce, or your favourite stir-fry sauce. Done when pink and curled into a “C” shape.

Boiling/Hot Pot (2–3 min)

Drop frozen shrimp directly into simmering broth or water. They’re done the moment they turn pink and opaque. Remove immediately — overcooked shrimp turns rubbery fast.

Pan-Searing (4–5 min)

Pat shrimp dry if partially thawed. Sear in butter and garlic over medium-high heat, 2 min per side. Finish with lemon juice and fresh herbs. Perfect for a quick weeknight dinner.

Steaming (5–6 min)

Arrange frozen shrimp in a single layer in a steamer. Top with ginger and green onion. Steam until pink and just cooked through. Serve with dipping sauce.

The Golden Rule: Don’t Overcook

Shrimp cook incredibly fast. The moment they curl into a tight “C” and turn fully pink — they’re done. A loose “C” means perfectly cooked; a tight “O” means overcooked. Pull them off the heat immediately.
